Reviving Property with DISD Career & Technical Education
During this internship-extenrship program students in the business and construction program joined us to engage in the day-to-day operations of a small project management firm. This initiative aimed to empower both students and educators to participate in operational activities, carry insights into the classroom, and foster a deeper appreciation for how their class subjects are integral to construction and real estate projects. We hosted a student in architecture, an entrepreneurship teacher, and a student and teacher in accounting. The team worked on a small dwelling that had remained vacant for several years, and through creative efforts, was revamped to a livable home. This summer program was held in person at Good Coworking for a period of 6-weeks. This experience facilitated the attainment of various skills and industry exposure, including
- presentation skills and effective communication
- building a PROJECT budget FOR THE FULL RENOVATION
- property visits to mark repair areas, and learning to use power tools
- attending contractor meetings and communicating AS A TEAM
- SELECTING DESIGN ITEMS & tracking inventory
- financial modeling for debt repayment & RENTAL RETURNS
- connecting HOME UTILITIES + COMPARING COSTS (power, gas & wifi)
- furnishing the home and staging it for photos
